To be fair , it's the norm . Assumptions are made all the time , often based on typology . If it can ever be corroroborated it will probably be proved to be relatively accurate but there will be exceptions .Technology and excavation can show some sites to be much older or younger than was previously believed .Let's face it tonight there will be plenty assumptions possibly stated as "fact" some about astronomical alignments i.e mid winter is the primary orientation at Stonehenge etc .
