I can't really add to what bawn has already said.

The Boyne Valley is a must but if you fancy something not so touristy and want to do a bit of trekking I always love the Silvermine mountains in Tipperary. There are some great tombs there and rarely visited. However, for a first visit maybe sticking to the tourist places is best.

Lough Gur is also great!
