(Possibly the basis of the custom of the first foot in Scottish folklore being a tall dark and handsome stranger??).

Off further on a tangent LOL, but I've alwys heard it's the darkest of the household to lead first footing as they are the least Viking looking - harping back to times of invasion / settlement.

It was the weather-darkened strangers from the hills coming into the towns with goods and food to trade and barter which were the basis of my suggestion......
Anyway...way off topic even more......the true selection of a 1st-footer from many years ago...
Householder.."Who will be the 1st-foot?"(ie the one kicked out of the house before the bells to sit and shiver on the tenement stairs for a good 10 minutes)
Partygoer.."Send Al out!"
Householder.."He's got to be tall!"
Partygoer.."Al's 6 foot!"
Householder.."He's got to be dark!"
Partygoer.."Al's hair is jet black!"
Householder..""He's got to be handsome!"
Partygoer.."Al's hair is jet black!"
..........it's a wonder I'm not mentally scarred!!!
