Some of the pros and cons for the re-erection of the fallen/buried stones at Avebury are discussed here - http://heritageaction.wordpres[...]oration-and-the-stukeley-line/

The feature argues that, unlike most ancient monuments in Britain, Avebury is possibly unique in having (in the observations of William Stukeley and his 1743 publication Abury, A Temple of the British Druids, With Some Others Described)* a legitimate reference point for the restoration of the Avebury Henge and its Avenues.

* For a full facsimile of William Stukeley’s book see “Abury – A Temple of the British Druids” here - http://www.avebury-web.co.uk/AburyWS/AburyWS.html
