Even amongst the highly educated, there's still a tendency to embrace the evidence supporting one's bias, and discard that which doesn't. I've come across this again and again with regards to prehistoric sites in the former eastern bloc/ussr which have attracted all sorts of quacks and demagogues with nationalist agendas.
