Was the surface at the bottom of the grooves spectacularly smooth, like the Avebury polisher?

Moth,
I've never been to the Elva stone circle. Embarassing for me, seeing as I've been to most of the esoteric sites in the area. I'll make a point of visiting soon, and examining it. It's quite a remote and unremarkable site really, except for the so-called axe-marks.
I'll be coming from the south of Cumbria, but my mate lives in Cockermouth, very near. He probably won't have chance to look for me, as he's a mountain guide, and is usually fully booked up taking people walking, rock climbing, and taking some on the via ferrata on Honister Pass. I'll have to visit on the way home from a day on the fells or crags near Buttermere.
Cheers,
TE.
