If you notice how the upper edge of that flat stone is parallel to the ground and only half set in the wall you might come to the conclusion that it's a cattle trough. Troughs carved out of square blocks of stone are quite rare and very valuable. Difficult to date, though, unless the maker has signed it or there is contemporary graffiti! (Hope it's got a tap nearby).
