Oooohh, yeah!! Forgot the Barnhouse settlement - well worth a shufti!!!
If memory serves, you can book a slot to see Maes Howe so you don't turn up & have to hang about. Might be worth trying to book a slot to see it at the end of the day, which we did by accident. It may've been coincidence, but there were only 4 of us & the guide was happy to chat for ages.
Also, at least when we were there, you could get in to see Skara Brae for free after the visitors' centre had shut, tho it meant you couldn't get to see the reconstructed house (or the vistors' centre itself, obviously!) It also meant there were no bloody tourists there.... ;^)
