Fascinating stuff about techniques, all you guys. I have learned a lot, reading through it. But how much of it would actually have been necessary, if the stones were all on Salisbury Plain to start with, not far from Stonehenge? You may recall that HH Thomas thought that the sarsens came from the vicinity of Stonehenge, and not from Overton Down. And Richard Thorpe and his colleagues in 1991 thought that the motley collection of bluestones was simply an erratic assemblage gathered up from not far away.

Sure, ancient man COULD have achieved mighty feats, with a lot of ingenuity, but if he didn't even have to go far away to gather up his stones, why would he have bothered?

I certainly don't disagree with you..

But near or far it still needs to be moved.. and how that was achieved is still a mystery..

Not with 100 Oxen in pairs of two, I'm thinking..

Logistically a nightmare.

50 ropes leading back to the stone. 50 men to control the beasts..

Madness.. I tell you Madness..
