Incidentally, note how they're not even being led, they're just plodding along of their own volition, like they were ploughing. Also, see what a very narrow cleared track they require.

Actually, the picture is a bit of a cheat, the logs are on a crude set of rails. But the whole picture does illustrate an important point you made - once you get going it's a lot easier. You'd need to kick the beasts quite a bit at the start to overcome the initial inertia but then it's much plainer sailing. We found that to be very much the case at Foamhenge, keeping it moving was the key. Which is why I favour your "lubricant" idea. Placing rollers just couldn't be done fast enough, it was a big hindrance for dubious payback compared with other means of reducing friction.
