I've went to look at this boat in Derby museum, a very large dug-out, good for river work. It seems to me that the first real boats probably evolved from such a craft.

Stage one. Take two such dug-outs place them side by side and fasten them together.

Stage two. Take two such dug-outs place them side by side, remove the gunwhale and some of the port side from one and do the same to the starboard side of the other. Fasten the two halves together.

Stage three. Repeat stage two then sew planks to each gunwhale. Result, A Northferribee boat, capable of carrying a crew of 10/12 men and substantial cargo on a sea journey.
