Yes, winged ants only come out and fly once, have a shag (hopefully) then die. Well, the majority of them, males that is, anyway.
But.....(and I'm not an entymologist).....I presume they develop underground and only appear when the atmospheric conditions are favourable. So, if they develop and then the weather isn't quite right for - a length of time - they'll wait below the surface........won't they?
