Well, have you seen the West Kennet Avenue stones leading up to the Sanctuary? There they lie where they were toppled, by the side of the busy, indifferent A4, in hedgerows, prone and neglected in a field - it is a shambles . . . , and this is 'World Heritage'? Yes, this is also part of the glorious WHS site - looks more like a sarsen-breakers' back yard. Apart from their bulk, I fear these megaliths are actually at risk - at least if they were raised and visible they would at least be 'missed' if some future Farmer Green - gods forbid - set his unblinking gaze on them, for whatever reason. Presently they are exposed, vulnerable yet invisible to the casual observer. I'm talking about marvellous lichened sarsen megaliths just sprawling amongst the nettles. It's enough to make a grown man cry - and frequently does.
